History of Elmwood: Elmwood Avenue Presbyterian Church was founded in 1953, and is located at 2816 Elmwood Ave in Erie.
Many associate the current church as being housed in a beautiful, stately landmark in central Erie. However, the bricks and mortar that make up the building provide lesser support to the institution than those members who have greatly impacted the neighborhood and community over the years.
From its inception as the First Associated Reform United Presbyterian Church in 1811, Elmwood has evolved into a community asset. The formation of Elmwood truly began to take shape in the early 1900s, as the Poplar Street Mission was formed by the United Presbyterian Church. This mission eventually led to the creation of the Brown Avenue United Presbyterian Church. Strong growth and an exceptional Sunday School program strengthened the organization.
It was in the 1920s that the congregation purchased lots at the corner of 29th and Elmwood, however, economics prohibited a move at this time. It wasn’t until the 1940s that the move to 29th and Elmwood became a reality. In order to expand, this new building was needed. Because of the move, and the exceptional leadership of those who worked tirelessly on this event, the church grew by leaps and bounds. In 1962, Elmwood merged with the First United Presbyterian Church. In 1964, a large education annex was added. Currently, the Lake Erie Presbytery has their offices in our building.
Elmwood Avenue Presbyterian Church is in a Ministry Partnership with Belle Valley Presbyterian Church where the Pastor is shared by both congregations. We all care about this community, and hope to bring the genuine embrace of God to all.
